The Velas Turtle Festival is a celebration held annually in the coastal village of Velas in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, India. The festival is held in honor of the Olive Ridley sea turtles, which come to the shores of Velas to lay their eggs. During the festival, locals and tourists gather to witness the hatching of the baby turtles and their journey to the sea. The festival aims to raise awareness about the conservation of sea turtles and their habitats. Velas turtle festival 2024 Velas turtle festival 2024

Velas is a unique experience because travelers and photographers enjoy their time watching baby turtles take first steps of their life towards the sea. The Velas beach and Velas village offer a great ecotourism experience for all the travelers, it’s simply amazing to be a part of a rustic and cozy village life.

Velas is a small eco-village in Ratnagiri in Maharashtra, which is famous for Olive Ridley Turtles that visit the beach there every year to lay eggs. And once they’re ready to hatch, you can bear witness to a truly heart-warming sight, as thousands of newly hatched Olive Ridley Turtles take their first step towards the big blue sea.

Maharashtra is blessed with 720 kms long coastline. Shared with Konkan, Thane, and Ratnagiri also Sindhudurg districts. Many marine creatures come visit. However, the exact count and type are unknown. As from what is believed there is not a detailed study available.

In the year 2000-01, it was found that a species of turtle, Olive Ridley is a prominent visitor to the shores of Maharashtra for breeding purposes.

Other species are the Green Turtle, Hawksbill and the Leatherback. A lot of the other information is already available online, like what does turtles eat, how a turtle looks like. The difference between a turtle, tortoise and a terrapin.

Olive Ridley Turtles are one of the most endangered species of turtle. To protect and conserve these turtles, the Marine Conservation Society hosts this turtle festival at Velas every year to spread awareness and promote Eco-tourism. The location is Velas, a remote village in Mandangad taluka in Ratnagiri district approx. a 6 hour drive from Mumbai.
