The Velas Turtle Festival is a celebration held annually in the coastal village of Velas in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, India. The festival is held in honor of the Olive Ridley sea turtles, which come to the shores of Velas to lay their eggs. During the festival, locals and tourists gather to witness the hatching of the baby turtles and their journey to the sea. Velas is a unique experience because travelers and photographers enjoy their time watching baby turtles take first steps of their life towards the sea. The Velas beach and Velas village offer a great ecotourism experience for all the travelers, it’s simply amazing to be a part of a rustic and cozy village life.
Velas is a small eco-village in Ratnagiri in Maharashtra, which is famous for Olive Ridley Turtles that visit the beach there every year to lay eggs. And once they’re ready to hatch, you can bear witness to a truly heart-warming sight, as thousands of newly hatched Olive Ridley Turtles take their first step towards the big blue sea.
Maharashtra is blessed with 720 kms long coastline. Shared with Konkan, Thane, and Ratnagiri also Sindhudurg districts. Many marine creatures come visit. However, the exact count and type are unknown. As from what is believed there is not a detailed study available.
In the year 2000-01, it was found that a species of turtle, Olive Ridley is a prominent visitor to the shores of Maharashtra for breeding purposes.
Other species are the Green Turtle, Hawksbill and the Leatherback. A lot of the other information is already available online, like what does turtles eat, how a turtle looks like. The difference between a turtle, tortoise and a terrapin.
Olive Ridley Turtles are one of the most endangered species of turtle. To protect and conserve these turtles, the Marine Conservation Society hosts this turtle festival at Velas every year to spread awareness and promote Eco-tourism. The location is Velas, a remote village in Mandangad taluka in Ratnagiri district approx. a 6 hour drive from Mumbai.

- Hatching is the natural process. Organizers won’t be responsible for no hatching or less number. Event are fixed as per post discussion with local only.
- Maximum batch size is 18 wanderers in one batch on first come first basis. Also Depend upon confirmation we will merge batch with other operator too.
- Velas village has basic facility of washrooms.
- Stay will be in Dormitory style typical kokani hut/home-stay with separate room for Male / Female.
- Liquors / Alcohol or any kind of recreational drug, smoking strictly not allowed.
- Non veg. will be available at Extra Cost (At the time of Dinner only) of Rs.150/- Per Head for Chicken & for Fish Rs.300/-. Specific type of fish subject to availability. Pre-order required.

The itinerary for the event will be as follows:
Day:0 – Friday
- 20:45pm – Common meeting point at Borivali National Park Gate ( Request to be on-time.)
- 21:00pm – Leave for Velas In-route pickup at Oberai Mall Malad, Andheri Flyover end, Bandra Kalanagar, Sion Circle, Ghatkopar-Mankhurd link road, Mankhurd, Vashi Flyover end, Kalamboli Mc-Donald
- In route halt for washroom. Overnight travel to base. Rest in Vehicle.
Day:1 – Saturday
- 05:30am – Reach Velas homestay, quick freshen-up and we will head to Velas Kasav Conservation center.
- 06:30pm – Visit velas beach to witness little turtle taking their first step towards sea (If hatching happened.), sighting and photo session move toward typical kokani type village with lil rest and proceed to Bankoat fort in noon. which is well known for its history and breathtaking view of Velas beach and Harihareshwar Temple. Explore surrounding and photos. Back to homestay have lunch and rest.
- Evening session visit beach again for hatching. Witness beautiful sunset from beach, back to stay. Evening snacks and Antakshari, fun games night photography followed by dinner. Retire of the day.
Day:2 – Sunday
- 06:00am – Early morning wake-up, Breakfast/Tea and freshen up
- 08:00am – Leave for Harihareshwar. One of the interesting part of trip where our bus will be transferred from one district to another in a jetty via sea route savitri river. Explore Harihareshwar Temple and beach & naal.
- If time permits then visit other beaches and after lunch start travel back.
- 23:30pm – Reaching back to mumbai tentative and tour conclude with memories.

- Smoking, Alcohol, Drugs, Narcotics and any kind of intoxication, firearms and gambling strictly prohibited. Please do not litter, we believe in the saying, “When you go to the nature/mountain leave only your footprints and bring back only memories” The leader’s decision will be final and binding on all members. No Arguments will be entertained.
- Due to remote village there might be electricity issue. Kindly cooperate.
- Delay in above schedule can be consider as vehicle breakdown (Due to bad road condition.), health issue or any other unforeseen condition which beyond organizer control. Request to cooperate.
