Kaulyachu Dhar & Nakhinda Ghat Trek, trail from Ambivali to Pethwadi, then along Kaulyachi Dhar to Nakhinda Bogdha, and further through Nakhinda Ghat back to Pethwadi and Ambivali forms a scenic loop. Kaulyachi Dhar, a ridge route on this journey, offers breath-taking views but can be slippery during the monsoon season. It’s advisable to ascend via this route, relishing the vistas as you climb, and descend through Nakhinda Ghat for a safer and more stable journey.

Kothaligad, also known as the Fort of Peth, is a charming destination nestled east of Karjat near Ambivali village. Renowned for its modest height and manageable ascent, it captivates travelers seeking an accessible trekking experience. Its proximity to Peth village lends it the moniker “Fort of Peth.”

Atop this fort, a small temple and expansive cave await exploration, alongside a distinctive chimney-like tunnel facilitating access to the summit. The fort’s interior boasts a staircase carved from rock, adding to its allure and earning it the name “Kothligad.” Historically, the caves served as storage for ammunition, while various features such as water cisterns, fortification walls, a carved entrance, cannons, and a cave adorned with intricate carvings on pillars enrich its historical tapestry. Additionally, the presence of the local deity Bhairav adds a spiritual dimension to the site.

From the fort’s vantage point, panoramic vistas encompassing Padargad, Peb, Matheran, Siddhagad, and the Bhimashankar mountain range unfold, offering a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding landscape.

For travellers traversing between the Konkan and Andhra Maval on the Deccan plateau, two ghat routes stand prominent: Nakhinda Ghat and Kaulyachi Dhaar. These pathways, still frequented by local villagers, serve as vital conduits, connecting distinct regions while showcasing the natural splendor of the Western Ghats.
